La Semana's Service Project
How We Select a Service Project
Each year, La Semana selects a different beneficiary for a Service Project. The recipient will typically be directly affiliated with or located in the country of our theme for that year. Nominations should be emailed to ServiceProject@LaSemana.org and will only be accepted from current camp families and only from the day after camp ends until January 15th of the following year. The La Semana Executive Committee will chose the winner. Whomever submits the winning recipient will serve as the liaison between the winning organization and La Semana and will be expected to:
- Identify the specific need of the organization,
- Draft language for the La Semana website promoting the Service Project recipient,
- Obtain photos for the website, and
- Create promotional materials such as posters for display at camp.
That person will also enjoy the privilege of representing La Semana in the issuance of a check to the organization (no, we are not sending you to Latin America but will probably just take a picture of you holding the check). Service Project funds are earned through sales of Latin American food sold each day at camp.
Project for the People of Paraguay has been selected as the 2013 Service Project Recipient.
During camp, a variety of authentic Latin American foods are available for purchase in the cafeteria. Coffee, soda, and sweet empanadas are available all day long. Empanadas, tamales, quesadillas, rice, beans, chips, and a daily special entree are available during the lunch hour. Proceeds from food sales will be donated to the Annual Service Project. Ala carte prices range from $1-$3.

The 2012 Project: Over $4,000 Raised for Hogar Urpi in Peru!
Hogar Urpi, an orphanage in Peru, was selected as the Annual Service Project recipient for La Semana 2012. All profit from food sales will be used by the Hogar Urpi. The boys living at Hogar Urpi are learning local crafts, including stone carving and leather work, that may lead to adult vocations.
